In responding to the complex composition of the site, which consist of a busy commercial street, a shopping mall, institutional area, the Bandung Zoo, a highly polluted river and two housing squatters that sit in between the perimeter of the site, the proposal of the Public Bath for Cihampelas is being designed to create a sustainable kind of place-making; a kind of public building designed to fully utilize the potential of open public space. The massing options try to liberate the ground level of the site in order to give back the open area to the surrounding community for their daily activities, while at the same time trying to control the public-private zoning of the new building. These options also try to reduce the foot print area of the building mass, while still able to occupy the required programs for the building.
